New Brunswick

Rooting through boxes of junk in the basement and sorting through old photos brings back all sorts of memories.

John and I were discussing New Brunswick the other day, specifically in reference to the Fundy Footpath, a trail we hiked together on the Labour Day weekend of 2000. We both agreed that we’d like to return there and hike that trail again some day, although this time we’d give ourselves more than three days. It was a brutal hike physically, as it basically did nothing but go up and down, but the scenery and the experience of spending so much time in proximity to the fundal coast and its tides were unforgettable!

I always think about New Brunswick when it starts to feel like fall. The foliage is an obvious reason, but the whole culture of harvest and bringing in the crops is another. The food grown there was amazing, as were the prices. The blueberries at U-Picks were awful – they grew on trees and were tasteless, but I could forgive the blueberries when I saw the apples.

Before we moved to NB, I had never seen real apples growing on trees. Crabapples, sure, but not Macintoshes or Paula Reds or Cortlands (my favorites!). We picked about four bushels a year while we lived there, at $12 a bushel or thereabouts.

If I go back to NB, it’ll be in the fall…..
