Planting things…

Facing the sun

Katherine and I spent much of the morning planting the plants that Dad gave us last weekend. We more or less took care of a wading pool’s worth of plant divisions and dug a new bed with which to do so. We also used up three wheelbarrow-loads of compost and had a great time gawking at the sunflowers down at the back of our lot.

The sunflowers there are volunteer hitchhikers, grown from seeds that fell onto sod on the front lawn last spring. We lifted a pile of ruined sod early in the summer and the sunflower seeds must have tagged along for the ride and seem to have like the rotting sod. There are three and they all spend their days following the sun across the sky.

So we dug a new bed, “planted some things”, as Katherine likes to put it, and watered everything thoroughly. For the sake of memory, we planted the lilies from Kelly M., as well as the daylilies, astilbe, columbine, betony, and some other unknown creature from Dad. There’s still a bleeding heart and a scary hosta waiting for attention and I have two lilies left to plunk into the lily bed. Still, a good morning’s work. Tomorrow we’re going to start cleaning up the rubble and detritus from the swingset area. I hope.

On other fronts:

  • In the meagre pickings from CBC.ca today, there was a quirky article about an international blog competition. Competitive blogging sounds too much like work……
  • John has what appears to be an ear infection. He’s had it for a week and when I suggested to him that he go to the doctor, he informed me that he didn’t have time. We had a chat about wacked-out priorities and emergency room wait times on weekends. I think he’ll be dropping into the clinic tomorrow.
  • Moss is really starting to fit in around here and behave properly.
  • Kids in Safe Seats is starting up again for the fall. Carseat clinics and organisation are back on my plate again. The break was nice, though….
  • Targa (an irritating group of people who don’t have a good website – no safety links for residents of the courses – and who intrude on public roads for the purpose of racing cars) is scheduled to zoom along our street in the near future. I’m truly not so keen on having large crowds of people trample my lawn, but hopefully they’ll stand somewhere else. I’m also hoping that no one misses the road and lands in my front yard. It’ll only be three or four hours, but perhaps I’ll go out for the afternoon. Not much chance of Katherine sleeping through it.

Glad you like my yellowness. The sunflower sprout was Jean’s happy-summer present from her Grade 2 teacher, and it did splendidly in a beef bucket.

Hostas sound intrinsically scary. Everything else sounds lovely, esp. lilies.

Yes, best to leave during Targa; the unexpected is bound to happen. Maybe move the dog fence to the front for the day? At least you’re not on a curve.

Yes, would love some medical tape, or recommendation of brand and specifics to buy some.
