One of the great things about blogging is that lots of other people do it and you can read a little bit of what goes on in their heads from time-to-time. Now there are some people whose heads have very little of interest in them. Frankly, I overdose pretty quickly on many of the politcal blogs. Often it’s a rehashing fo the same ideas, with the odd little nugget of originality thrown in. I skim the majority and grab the phrase of interest. more often, I read the first two paragraphs and move on if there’s nothing new.
So I was merrily blogrolling along today when I remembered Heather having told me yesterday about Craig Welsh’s (a friend of a friend from university days) blog and his experiences living in Iqualuit. So while on John Gushue’s page I wended my way north and read about Craig’s life for a while.
From there I followed another link to the blog of the friend of whom both Craig and I were friends, Kirsten Stole (née Starcher). I wasn’t sure it was her at first, but on the blog page of Kirsten Stole (who is also crows to burnaby online) I found a link to her Flickr pictures. One of them had a teeny, tiny photo of two people who turned out to be Kirsten and Greg (the man she left Newfoundland for, finding adventure and a life as she went). It looked like her, so I zinged off an email to make sure. Lo and behold, it was and she’s doing fine. Last saw her about ten years ago. Time flies too quickly.
Kirsten was (and probably still is) one of those cool without trying to be people who was also nice and clever. Through her I learned of the demise of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, discovered realms of the SCA that I’d never previously encountered, found that TPOH is worth listening too and was informed that non-computer science people could get computer science email accounts at MUN (faster accounts with larger limits and more computer access). Then she went to a TPOH concert, rethought her life, found love in Pennsylvania (or Philadelphia – can’t remember. Think it might have been the latter.), and transplanted herself. Now she’s in British Columbia working as a computer tech and writing music. Very cool. I always thought she’d end up in New Zealand or somewhere in Europe, though. Not sure where that idea came from. Anyway it was neat making a start at reading where her life is now.
I actually enjoyed reading Craig’s political jazz (to link this back to paragraph one), mainly because he can write quite well and actually thinks most of his opinions through. Not only that, he is rarely clichéd and almost never mundane. A sense of humour is another of his assets. Kirsten’s blog I have yet to finish reading. A project for another day of reminiscing, perhaps!

Hi Vicky – Glad you tracked me down; it was a great surprise to hear from you! I’m really glad to see you’re doing well. *applauds*
Oddly enough I’ve been in touch with three people this week that I haven’t heard from in a while – I wrote to one friend I haven’t written to in a year, and also saw the address of someone I knew from high school and dropped her a note as well. Must be some kind of nostalgia bug in the air.
I still want to visit New Zealand… don’t want to live there, though. I spent most of my life on islands – it’s kind of nice to be connected to the mainland for once 😉
