A rose by any other name….

… would still attract slugs. Luckily mine seem to have gotten off relatively unmolested this year. Not so my poor delphinium. The rose above is a bud from “Peace”, which is fairing extraordinarily well this year and was only planted last summer.

And working, of course. But lots of gardening. Things are in full swing in our yard. The lithodora (below) is glowing beneath the lilac that’s almost out. The Iris setosa (below) is just finishing now, but the tall and medium bearded irises are still showing their colours….. The broom plant is simply gorgeous, the columbine…

Temptations abound

This is the time of year at which I find it hardest to force myself to work. There are so many other things that I'd rather be doing; gardening, hiking, photographing….. Often I partially yield and find ways of justifying my delinquency. Photographing is…. honing my artistic eye and gathering images that can be used…

Rethinking grass.

Grass is inordinately important to our neighbour. I have never met anyone who cared as tenderly for it or spent as much time coddling it as he. He mows it weekly, waters it constantly, fertilises, limes, weeds, sprays and does everything except stroke it (and he may do that at night – I haven't checked)….
