Crawling the walls…

on

Do you ever have a day in which you walk around ALL DAY CRAVING CHOCOLATE?

You tell yourself that you don’t want any, don’t need any and shouldn’t eat any.

You don’t believe yourself.

You find yourself thinking of ways to make chocolate from what’s on-hand (cocoa, sugar, milk, etc.) because actually going to the store and BUYING chocolate would be admitting to being overcome by a craving, but making brownies or somesuch is providing for your family. Right?
I have been resisting this craving since 9:43 this morning. It is now 10:13pm.

I’m going mad.

A couple of weeks ago I bought an Eatmore chocolate bar, left it lying around because I was saving it for a post-midterm treat. Someone TOOK IT and ate it. I tell ya, it took a king-sized one to undo the bitterness after that. (Not in one sitting, though.)

I think that if some dark part of our mind gets convinced, however irrationally, that we deserve chocolate, no amount of self-denial will ever correct the problem. Addiction? Compulsion? Who knows? Then again, perhaps it is as necessary to good mental health as sunshine and sleep.

It is now 11:01 and I’m going to bed WITHOUT having indulged the demon craving. Hopefully it will wander off in search of other victims while I sleep.

Chocolate is definitely a necessary part of life, but I find that if I give in to these cravings, I either over-indulge and regret it or actually don’t truly feel satisfied because “chocolate” was only a name I gave to the feeling of being dissatisfied.

Of course, some times a cigar is just a cigar. Then chocolate helps.

  3. This is not a craving. This is a need. Chocolate is, well, chocolate. It’s essential. But only if it’s Really Good Swiss Chocolate. I am woman, see me drool!

I have had cravings for chocolate for the past few weeks. I buy a bar of dark chocolate and make it last about 3 days. I can’t seem to get enough of it here lately. I think hormones are behind this craving. I hope I can overcome this craving, but at the moment I am thinking it is a losing battle. Oh well, I might as well enjoy it while the mood is taking hold.

  5. The most unbelievable thing happened to me. I used to eat a schnibble (like a nibble but smaller) every day. One Dove Promise. Maybe two squares from a *good* chocolate bar (the endangered species ones are my favorite…if they are a total of 15 sections, I’d eat 3, or one short row a day).

Then I started Curves, and for the first time really got serious about losing the 20 pounds I put on with my second pregnancy (OK, it was 50 pounds I gained then but lost 30) plus the additional ten pounds I’d added on my own in the past 8 years. I cut out ALL desserts. Period. I have had chocolate maybe 4 or 5 times since last June (2005)!!!!! That is NINE months now! Wow…

and you know what, I don’t crave it any more like I used to. Some days….I can tell I’m pms’ing because I crave sweets or munchies, but it is an amazing change. Of course, when I get the last 12 pounds off (16-17 down, 12-15 to go) I’m gonna celebrate with a hot fudge sundae….the kind where the ice cream is the condiment that sets off the hot fudge!

    Cheers, Sarah

    Hey Vicky,
There is no point resisting a chocolate craving, just do it as the ad says !
That being said after being on the Weight Watchers plan via David’s cooking and point keeping, I lost a certain amount of weight and I too lost the chocolate cravings. I put it down to the large consumption of vegetables and fruits, we both stopped craving munchies of all kinds!
Very strange, probably some biochemical explanation there, now and then I have a bit of chocolate just ’cause it tastes good, just like an apple does but never feel I must have it or die trying !
