Old photos of Exploits

I spent some time recently digging through some old photos of Exploits that Grandma collected over the years and that I later scanned from prints. Some were taken by her, some by her son (my uncle, Peter M. Ball). Exactly who took which is a subject that only Peter could truly verify for us. I…

The wheels on the bus go…

I truly am stunned by a recent situation in which a local school bus driver was found impaired while driving (with no kids in the bus at the time). It seems obvious to me that sobriety while operating a moving vehicle (any vehicle at any time, for that matter) would be a very basic qualification…

Enough already!

Okay, quit it with the snow. I mean it. I don’t know or care who’s responsible (pick a deity, weatherman, or neighbours who buy large expensive snow-toys thus invoking some bizarre karma and you know who you are), but we’ve got plenty now you can go bother people in British Columbia thank you very much….

Marital Advisory Notice

When a bank that is directly across the hall from your office is the victim of an armed robbery while you are in said office, it’s good politics to let your wife know about it (and that you’re perfectly fine) first-hand and not to let her find out from the local news. Even if you…

How dumb can you get? (updated)

Update: The sentencing for Myers is in; six months house arrest and a two year driving suspension. Lucky for him he works from home…. Wonder if his petition to be allowed out periodically to go to court on his clients’ behalf will succeed or if he’ll even make one? I was skimming CBC.ca for interesting…

Tara Bryan’s book art

I was cruising CBC today and saw fellow craft council member Tara Bryan’s name jump out at me from the from page of the website. Her work is amazing and she’s an incredibly talented, well-spoken and intriguing person with whom to chat. I had the pleasure of being in the booth next to her at…

Logo contest

Rob over at RJProduct has launched a Logo Contest, in response to the somewhat ambivalent and uninspired logo designed for Newfoundland & Labrador by Target Marketing. Some entries are sardonic, some serious. Check it out! As a side note, the rest of the campaign seems to be fairly well-accepted and the video is great!

How will the world know us? As illiterate, maybe?

Our provincial government unveiled the new logo for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador today: I have no real complaints about it. It’s a little bland, perhaps, and lacks a conjunction (the word “and” is missing), but apart from those minor details, it doesn’t really bother me at all. In some sense, the graphic has…

Exploits, a few quick photos

We just got back from a couple of weeks on Exploits Islands in Notre Dame Bay. The weather wasn’t as good as can usually be expected in early August, but it was still a fabulous vacation. Some photos shot during those two weeks….. Looking across to Burnt Cove in the evening: Rope, awaing a ship:…

Bouncing off walls – a trip to Grates Cove, NL

I don’t know about anyone else, but I have this mental list of places within driving range that I’ve always wanted to see but haven’t yet gotten to. Gradually, I hope to work my way through them as the fates (Money, Capricious Child and Time) allow. One such was Grates Cove. Now Grates Cove is…
